IT JUST AIN'T IN HOUSTON, BABY!!

Brand new Homeland Security bill, 170,000 personnel, $36 billion. Has anybody noticed? There went all the states' right under the shredded Constitution; it will all be a big U.S. umbrella. Oh, and yes, Bush wants full hire-and-fire privileges all for himself. Where does that leave the unions? Federal employees? There went the Civil Service Commission, people staying for years in their jobs and working their way up in the Federal government. We had a president assassinated (I think it was Garfield) by a disgruntled former office holder because every new president stuffed the offices with his cronies when he took office. Now, I just wonder who Bush has in mind for, for example the department who decides who gets the contracts for all the new snoop stuff and planes and KITTY HAWKS and other things for fight against terrorists. Halliburton (Cheney's old firm) just got $8.6 to build 200 new cages in Gitmo Bay, as an example.

Another thing to worry about. Rumsfeld wants U.S. troops to help hunt terrorists domestically. Just what we need is more kinds on the streets with rifles, and of course they will be over local law enforcement. But he's started with a toehold in Oregon fighting forest fires. Next they'll be on campuses making sure anti-Pali demos aren't disturbed. And there was an Act passed in late 1880s prohibiting that from happening, citing possibilities for gross mishandling and mismanagement, and that Act has worked for 125 years.

So what we have is Rumsfeld putting American troops wherever he wants, ticking off more little guys in the streets of the Middle East each time a missile flies and a bomb drop, we have Bush with his Patriot Act snooping around or emails, military tribunals, more powers given to the FBI to attend meetings where "terrorist activity may be being planned" (is that the Sierra Club?), a TIPSter program, we have a new Fatherland Security Force being planned to tell us who to hire as truck drivers, etc., and we have American troops on our soil potentially shooting American citizens. So we have Rumsfeld making enemies, and George and Dick keeping us safe from when they get just angry enough to buy an airline ticket and some boxcutters! Sounds like a cycle, an unending cycle?

We have a problem, and it AIN'T just in Houston (Enron's home base).
